Indonesian Council of Ulama No. 27 of 2013 on the Use of Shellac in Food, Medicine and Cosmetics

This fatwa acknowledges that shellac is a resin secreted by the lac insect that lives in plants. It declares that shellac is holy (suci) and its use in food, medicine and cosmetics is halal, provided it provides benefit and is not hazardous.
