Sharia Court of Antakya (Ottoman Empire)

This court certificate (hujja/hüccet) was issued by the qāḍī court of Antakya on 8 Zilkade 1190/19 December 1776. A proxy, Es-Seyyid İbrahim Ağa, made this transfer of property on behalf of his father, Ahmed ibn Ebu Bekir bin Abdullah, and Ayşe bint Mehmed. The property, a çiftlik (farm), included houses, vineyards, olive trees, various fruit gardens, and a half share in a mill. While these were sold (bey-i batt), eight pieces of miri (state-owned) land were transferred by cession (firagh), following Ottoman property regulations. This document is an example of land law application in the Ottoman Empire.
