Sigli Shari'a Court Decision No. 2 of 2009: Gambling

The prosecution submitted that the accused, on Saturday 15 November 2008 at around 3.00pm, was found operating as a bookie at his own sales kiosk. Specifically, that the accused had been facilitating bingo-style (toto gelap) bets to Singapore every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, keeping 15 per cent of takings for himself. The prosecution submitted that this type of activity was in contravention of arts 5 and 23(1) of Aceh Qanun No. 13 of 2003 on Gambling.

Based on items seized at the time of the arrest of the accused, including four betting cards and IDR 117,000 in cash, as well as corroborating information provided by two witnesses, the court found the accused guilty of the charges submitted by the prosecution. The court condemned the actions of the accused and sentenced him to eight strokes of the cane.
