Sigli Shari'a Court Decision No. 5 of 2013: Gambling

The accused was accused of gambling (maisir), contrary to arts 5 and 23(1) of Qanun No. 13 of 2003 on Gambling. Items used in the prohibited activities, including two mobile phones, a bingo (togel) sheet, and IDR 150,000, were seized by authorities and entered as evidence. In finding the accused guilty of gambling activities, the court acknowledged that Allah prohibits every Muslim from gambling, as contained in Qur'anic verse 90 in Surah Al-Maidah. The court, pursuant to art 23(1) of Qanun No. 13 of 2003, handed down a punishment of nine strokes of the cane.
