Sigli Shari'a Court Decision No. 1 of 2013: Gambling

The accused was accused of gambling (maisir), contrary to arts 5 and 23(1) of Qanun No. 13 of 2003 on Gambling. Items used in the prohibited activities, including a mobile phone and IDR 159,000 in cash, were entered as evidence. In finding the accused guilty of gambling activities, the court acknowledged that Allah prohibits every Muslim from gambling, as contained in Qur'anic verse 90 in Surah Al-Maidah. The court, pursuant to art 23(1) of Qanun No. 13 of 2003, handed down a punishment of 10 strokes of the cane.
