Indonesian Council of Ulama Fatwa No. 1 of 2005 on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights

This fatwa declares that intellectual property rights are recognised and protected under Islamic law. Moreover, that they can be the object of a contract (commercial or non-commercial), can be transferred into an endowment, as well as bequeathed to beneficiaries. The fatwa also declares that unauthorised dealings with the intellectual property rights of another person, without their permission, is haram (forbidden).
