Hossein Modarressi

Hossein Modarressi is the Bayard Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. He teaches courses in Islamic law and Islamic thought, and has published numerous books and articles Contributors 202 on Islamic law, philosophy, and history—including: Tradition and Survival: A Bibliographical Survey of Early Shīʿite Literature (Oneworld, 2003); Crisis and Consolidation in the Formative Period of Shīʿite Islam (Darwin Press, 1993), and An Introduction to Shīʿī Law (Ithaca Press, 1984). He first attended the Islamic seminary at Qum (Iran) where he received a complete traditional Islamic education in Arabic language and literature; Qurʾān and ḥadith; and Islamic philosophy, theology, and law. He then received degrees from secular institutions, culminating in a PhD in Islamic law from Oxford University.
